For the college student, moving to where there will be a high percentage of students might be better than moving where there are families or people who keep very different hours than you do.
If you own a vehicle, parking arrangements is something you need to be aware of. Apartments located in larger buildings are likely to have parking spaces to offer their tenants. On the other hand, if you plan to move downtown, the spaces may be limited. The other option is parking on the street, but this can lead to issues because of snow removal, street sweepers and other vehicles, and the potential for being ticketed. It may also mean that finding a spot near your building might not always be so easy. If you anticipate that this could be a problem, try this- drive by the complex during the evening hours and see if there are any available spots.
The policy at apartments is not always the same. You want to feel safe when you become a tenant in a new building. After you view the unit and decide that you like it, ask the management if they do background checks on the people who move in. Not all landlords conduct checks on the criminal histories of those that live under their roof. Even if you never get to know your neighbors well, you want to feel safe and comfortable at home. One of the ways to do that is to inquire about background checks. If that is the policy, be prepared to consent to one for yourself as well.
There is nothing worse than discovering that there is a flood in your place when you get home from work or first thing in the morning when you get out of bed. Whatever the emergency may be, you want to know that it will be addressed right away. To feel confident about this, find out if there is onsite maintenance. If you have to wait more than 24 hours for a problem to get fixed, you may be better off looking elsewhere. If the complex is not well maintained in the entry way or corridors, this is a sign that management are not in a hurry to make repairs.
