Thorpe Village in Surrey is definitely best known for being the nation’s thrill capital at Thorpe Park. Outside the winter months, it is packed with people of all ages who are seeking the buzz of riding some of the most terrifying rides in the UK – Saw, Colossus, Stealth – the list goes on as more adventure rides are added every year to keep the riders coming back for more. Thorpe Park is billed as the place to get your adrenaline pumping! Boasting some of Europe’s most extreme rides and attractions, the centre has a core audience of 16 to 34 year olds and ‘up-for-it’ families’, but do not be surprised to be queuing with an OAP – thrill seeking is not just a young man’s game.
However, very few that visit the amusement park know that there is a charming and ancient village of Thorpe tucked around the corner, hidden from the hordes of visitors. Not keen on having swarms of idle tourists descending into their sleepy haven, this is perhaps the best kept secret of Thorpe!
Thorpe Village is shielded by fields, lakes and woods – keeping a very low profile from the crowds heading down the A320. Delightful buildings pre-dating 1850 form much of the core of the village centre which constitutes a delightful conservation area.
Thorpe is also known on a more local level for its watersports centre which is actually the UK’s largest Water-ski and Wakeboard centre. There are 5 lakes at Thorpe and one of them can be accessed from a boat landing directly to the village centre for the locals to enjoy.
The small village of Thorpe has an incredible 28 listed buildings and St Mary’s church dates from the 7th century. Notable former inhabitants of Thorpe include TV personality Frank Muir, crime writer David Williams and Admiral Hardy (1769-1839), captain of HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar.
Much of Thorpe today is inhabited by the staff and pupils of TASIS (originally short for The American School in Switzerland)- the American school in England. This is a prominent international school that began in 1976, TASIS England provides an educational experience that promotes innovation, creativity, global perspectives, and critical thinking. Students are able to explore and learn beyond the confines of the classroom and are taught an international curriculum rather than the English education system.
Transport links are fabulous from Thorpe. A quick drive to M25 and M3 and M4. Heathrow is extremely close – but not overhead and train stations are at Virginia Water or Chertsey, just a couple of miles away.
