Unless you’re inunusual circumstances, you normally have a month or two for preparation time before you take possession of your real estate. So use it wisely. Determine what needs to be done when and build a timeline that lays out all the tasks. Then you can tick them off one by one instead of ticking off your helpers on moving day.
Get Your Trucks in a Row
It may be true that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, but it’s not always a truck-friendly route. That’s why it’s vital to treat the move like a war. Strategize, consider your options and then craft your plan of attack. Once the trip to your real estate is mapped out, it’s time to choose your allies.
Will you be recruiting your friends or renting a truck? Do you have too much stuff or too far to go for either of those options? If so, start researching some moving companies well in advance of your move to real estate. Ask others who they’ve used and check out the online reviews. Once you’ve narrowed it down, ask for references and decide which one fits with your budget. Just don’t let price override the other factors. Going with the cheapest company sight unseen could move you to tears before the day is over.
Clue in your Crew
It would be nice if your crew members were like elves that showed up while you slept and magically transported all your belongings with no guidance required. But real movers are taller and less clairvoyant. Make sure they have all the details they need to do their job and, in the process, make yours a lot easier. Are there heavy items like refrigerators or armoires that they need to be aware of? Does your building lack an elevator or have really narrow doorways? Inform them as much as possible and it will pay off in a faster, more efficient move. And the sooner they’re done, the less it will cost you. Unlike the elves, these guys may charge by the hour.
No matter how well you prepare, there’ll probably be a bump or two on your way to a fresh start with real estate. But by drafting a plan and getting organized sooner rather than later, you can lower your stress, skip the wine and ensure a smooth move from start to finish.
