Analyzing and Comparing Moral Values in Professional Codes of Ethics: A Philosophical Exploration

This paper is due at the end of the day on Wed of Week 4 of the course. Refer to the Engage Calendar for the actual due date. You must submit your paper by the due date into the provided drop box in the Code of Ethics Paper (MA1) block in Engage. The Engage program will automatically submit a copy of your paper to Turnitin.com to check for plagiarism . Choosing a Code of Ethics Not all professional codes of ethics are appropriate for this assignment. Some , such as the American Medical Association (AMA) and American Bar Association (ABA) are too long and complicated to serve as the basis for your paper. Others, many law enforcement and military codes for example, are too brief and unsophisticated to serve as the basis for your paper. So y ou must base your paper on one of the code s of ethics listed in this section. Choose the code of ethics from the list that is most closely related to the profession you are pursuing. All of the codes of ethics in the list are available online . Most are available directly from the best source of professional codes — professional association website s. A few are available through the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions. Choices f or Students Who are NOT Cybersecurity Students Base your paper on one of the following codes of ethics: Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct American Dental Association Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct American Marketing Association (AMA) Code of Ethics American Nursing Association (ANA) Code of Ethics American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Code of Ethics and Ethical Standards American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Code of Ethics American Veterinary Medical Association Principle of Veterinary Ethics Association of American Educators (AAE) Code of Ethics 2 Association of Government Accountants (AGA Code of Ethics) Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Code of Professional Ethics of the Construction & Program Manager Hippocratic Oath (for pre -med students only; compare and contrast the moral values represented in the ancient version with those represented in the modern version by Louis Lasagna) International Chiefs of Police Code of Ethics (the 1989 version found at https://ethics.iit.edu/ecodes/ node/3353 ; not the Oath of Honor) National Education Association (NEA) Code of Ethics Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Code of Conduct for Law Enforcement Officials Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Code of Ethics Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Code of Ethical and Professional Standards IMPORTANT: If none of these codes of ethics are close to the career you have chosen, please contact your professor. Substitute codes of ethics may be accepted. When proposing a substitute code of ethics, include a URL to the substitute code. Choices f or Cybersecurity Students Your professor can not find a well -developed code of ethics directly related to the cybersecurity field . All of the codes of ethics easily found online are just too short and reference too few moral values to serve as a basis for this assignment. This is a clear sign of an emerging profession. If you can find a better code, let’s see it ! But until we can find a well -developed code related to your field, please you do your Code of Ethics P aper based one of the following choices: Compare and contrast the role of moral values and value clusters in the SANS Institute IT Code of Ethics (Version 1.0 – April 24, 2004 ; https://peterhgregory.wordpress.com/professional -background/sans -it-code -of- ethics/ ; this is the best cybersecurity code so far) with the role of moral values and clusters in the Cybersecurity Institute (CSI) Code of Ethics and Conduct (http://www.corcosconsulting.com/blog/wp -content/uploads/2016/06/Code -of- Ethics -and -Conduct -CyberSecurity -Institute.pdf ) OR Analyze the role of moral values and value clusters in the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct 3 Code of Ethics Paper Content Requirements 1. Spend at most one -half page presenting background material at the start of your paper. The paper is NOT supposed to focus on the nature of your field, the nature of morality… Th e paper is supposed to be about the moral values – i.e. the moral values (and moral value clusters) that are on our class list (found in the Unit 1 Lesson and on the CRM form) – that according to the code (or “codes” if comparing and contrasting two short codes) of ethics you are analyzing , are most important in the code(s). Your purpose in writin g it to clarify to your reader the role the moral values on our class list play in the code(s) of ethics you discuss. 2. This is a philosophy paper. So be sure to include a detailed thesis statement in your introductory paragraph. Your thesis statement should be somewhat BOLD . It should make definite claims about the relative importance of the different moral values (and moral value clusters) on our class list in the code(s). The idea is to present your thesis in your introductory section, prove that thesis in the body of your paper, and then summarize what you have proven in your co nclusion. That’s how philosophy papers typically go! 3. Spend at least three full pages discussing the major moral values and moral value clusters that the code (s) of ethics seeks to promote. Code s of ethics often list moral values that do not coincide with the values on our cl ass list of moral values . (See Introductory Lesson or the CRM Form for our list of moral values .) Go by the list of moral values discussed in this class — the values and clusters of values listed on the CRM form — instead of by the terminology found in the code of ethics itself, or by MPL’s list of moral values. If necessary, translate the value names listed on the cod e of ethics into the corres ponding value names on our list of moral values . 4. Be sure t o prove that the mora l values and moral value clusters you say are important in the code are discussed in the code of ethics. Do this by incl uding short quotes from the code of ethics and/ or section identifiers that indicate where reference to these values can be found in the code. In other words, indicate where the points you make can be found in the code(s). 5. Remember that your purpose in writing is to analyze what the code of ethics says about the role of the moral values in your selected profession. Your purpose in writing is NOT to emphasize your own point of view on the role of moral values and moral value clusters in your selected profession. So be sure to stress what the code(s) say about which values and clusters are important in your profession. Including you r own ideas about the role of moral values in your selected profession is fine, but only after you have described in detail what the code itself says about moral values. 6. As part of your discussion of moral values, identify any of the moral values of moral value clusters from our list that the code (s) of ethics does not stress. Answer: Why 4 doesn ’t the code (s) of ethics stress these values or value clusters more ? Should the code(s) stress any of these values or clusters more? This is one part of your paper where your own opinion should be front and center. 7. In your conclusion, argue that you have proven the thesis you set forth in your introduction. 8. In your conclusion, provide an overall assessment of the code of ethics. Do not just say “I think the code (s) of ethics stresses the right moral values .” T hat’s just too easy and not very illuminating. Answer: Did the code emphasize the right values and value clusters from our class list? Was anything significant overlooked? Code of Ethics Paper Formal Requirements 1. Include a title page that includes an informative title with your paper. You will lose a full grade point on your grade if this item is missing. You will also lose some credit if your title does not give your reader a clear indication of what is in your paper. 2. Be sure to adhere to all the requirements listed on the document titled “ Paper Rules .” 3. Your paper must include at least four full typewritten pages of body text. Do not count space taken up by the title page, page headers, extra white space or any supplementary materials as body text. Short papers will be marked down, perhaps all the way down to 0 points. 4. Engage will automatically submit a copy of your paper to Turnitin.com and test it for plagiarism. If cheating is detected, you will receive 0 points on the paper and perhaps an “F for cheating” in the course.
