If you can offer people their dream job… great! Life is suddenly so much easier for you.
For the rest of us, though, we have to resort to something even better.
Some jobs are awesome. Others are terrible. On the face of it, you might think that’s the end of the story. The best and brightest gravitate towards the best jobs, while everyone else grabs what they can.

And instead of spending hours researching courses that probably won’t be relevant to them…
And rather than writing inspirational speeches about why your work matters…
… focus on building the relationship with them.
Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose are by-products of awesome leadership, not the cause of it.
Because great leaders take time to work with their people.
I don’t just mean getting to know their strengths, ideas and aspirations – although that’s important too.
I mean creating more opportunities for them.
Following through with your word.
Keeping close contact, without keeping a close eye.
Your goal?
To maximise trust.
See how much you can trust them and get them to trust you. Yes, the trust goes both ways. If you think of your people as lazy criminals, you’ll never have a strong team – even if you’re right.
But no matter how right you are about that, there’s always ways to trust them more.
To give them the chance to prove themselves.
If they trust you, they’ll want to.
If not, maybe not.
But this is what a real dream job looks like: working for someone you trust and who trusts you back.
