Introduction
Situation, background, assessment, and recommendation is a communication approach used in the health industry between health care providers about patients’ conditions. It is easy to recall procedure, especially when a patient is in a critical condition and requires immediate examination. It fosters teamwork and instills patient safety among health practitioners since it paves the way for expectations and communication between team members (Ho, 2020).
Situation
Working as a information officer at Brightman and women hospital in Boston state-observed abnormities in the hospital that affected the operation and delivery of services to the patients.
Background
Together with other officials from the hospital, the chief informer decided to put into action Gemba walk, a process by which they were at the forefront of the workplace, watch night, and observing how the officials were undertaking their daily routines. The aim is to learn and associate closely with the staff, ensuring that operation in an organization is running smoothly.
The essence of the Gemba walks to monitor and establish what worked and what was faulty from thestaff’s perspective. Together with the other officials, the chief officer went ahead with their observation, finding different problems that were affecting the services in the healthcare unitsome that the officer was aware of, some that he came t find out. Safety concerns were raised, and the staff learned how to ask for system repairs besides responding to matters instead of ignoring them.
To control the practical issues identified, the hospital launched an app that was to aid in responding to matters. Nurses were required to take a picture and upload them into the system so that authorities could take action. As a result, responding was made easier since the staff never liked filling paper works for incidents.
The chief officer noticed that checking in of patients was slow because the staff and the operation manager had to direct patients to the right places to go from time to time. At the check-in, the chief officer also invited that the ques were long, resulting from a faulty printer.
To mitigate the shortcoming, an embed system was installed at the front desk; this was to streamline the process beside giving timely information in the care unit, besides reporting concern early to be solved on time.
Assessment
Some of these predicaments could never be identified if the manager had decided to engage the staff through a Gemba walk. Gemba’s purpose in any organization is not to instill fear and command to the worker, but to identify the problems and seek solutions to those predicaments.
After engaging with the staff, it is fair to say that it is a crucial aspect in any organization for it becomes easier to identify the problems, engage with the stuff, and even take into consideration their suggestions and It also gives them a sense of confidence for they know their opinions counts. They are the ones who are at the forefront all the time, so they know what is exactly affecting them. A healthy working environment is created that results in greater output from the staff (Wager, 2017).
Conclusion
In conclusion, we can say that SBAR is an essential communication tool that helps in communication in any organization. Also, Gemba walks are very important, for they give the senior a clear view of what is normally happening when they are sitting in their offices.
