PABX (Electronic Private Automatic Branch Exchange) is an innovative way of using a single telephone line among different users within an office. It is sort of distributing a company’s resources effectively among everyone who must have access to a landline phone within the enterprise. The principal object is to save money, though that is not the only purpose of a private exchange. Without a private exchange, every time someone wants to call another person within the office, they will have to make a normal call which will be switched at the telephone exchange, and this will cost money.
There are also some variants to EPABX which is a totally automated system. The other ones work with reduced features and often require someone to attend for transferring calls within the office, provide intra-office connectivity and facilitate to connect calls outside/handle in-coming coming call to the office. This type of telephone system is called PBX. It is an older technology and does not use scarce resources like telephone exchange lines efficiently. Automatic exchanges are capable of distributing outgoing calls efficiently and distributing load uniformly over different exchange lines. This is important because most telephone service providers charge less for the first few calls or even charge nothing for a certain minimum calls.
Distributing outgoing calls over many lines may not be important if you have one or two lines at the most, but when the subscribed lines runs into couple dozens, then it can make a big difference to your bills. Manually distributing loads over different lines is not a practical proposition, due to the enormity of the task involved and the stress it can cause to the operator. Not all EPABX system is created equal. There are different types, different manufacturers and different configurations to contend with.
Once automatic exchanges used to be an expensive piece of equipment and they also occupied vast office space. The latest models of EPABX are so compact that you might even mistake them for a landline phone. They weigh only marginally more than a typical landline phone and are mostly automatic, reliable and have umpteen numbers of features.
