PABX (Electronic Private Automatic Branch Exchange) is an innovative way of using a single telephone line among different users within an office. It is sort of distributing a company’s resources effectively among everyone who must have access to a landline phone within the enterprise. The principal object is to save money, though that is not the only purpose of a private exchange. Without a private exchange, every time someone wants to call another person within the office, they will have to make a normal call which will be switched at the telephone exchange, and this will cost money.

Distributing outgoing calls over many lines may not be important if you have one or two lines at the most, but when the subscribed lines runs into couple dozens, then it can make a big difference to your bills. Manually distributing loads over different lines is not a practical proposition, due to the enormity of the task involved and the stress it can cause to the operator. Once automatic exchanges used to be an expensive piece of equipment and they also occupied vast office space.
