Reflection Essay: Museum Exhibit Review
 
The Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art in the Brooklyn Mesuem showcases various exhibitions dedicated to feminist art, in its many shapes and forms. Zanele Muholi: Isibonelo/Evidence is one such exhibition dedicated not to just feminist art, but also displays black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people and their struggle for visibility as well as recognition. Prior to visting the mesum, I reviewed some of the readings that I wanted to comare to the exhibit. They included Gay is Good by Martha Shelley and Womanism by Alive Walker, which dealt with homophobia and the battle against oppression by colored women respectively. The description of how she was killed was just plain horrid. As were the other hate crimes decribed in the timeline given at the exhibit. It accounted several hate crimes against lesbians and gays in South Africa since 2009. This part formed the factual aspect of the exhibit and was quite an eye opener for someone like me who really had no idea about such hate crimes, at least not in such detail. The anonymous testimonies written in chalk were also quite chilling and impactful as well as scary. The fact that one human being can become so brutal to another is simply devastating. I have to admit when I first read Gay is Good I was a little ffended at the directlness and felt that it was mocking towards heterosexuals. But after going through the exhibit and leaning about the violence, I can see where the sarcasm and anger stems from. Whether is race, class, geder , sexuality or anyting, no human being deserves to be treated in such a manner. My knowledge and experience with and about the LGBT community in general is very limited but one can see that the violence they face is no different from that based on race.
