Film Response Paper Prompt
Respond and Connect
After viewing the film Good Fortune, please write a 2-3 page paper that discusses both your responses to the film and the connections you can draw to course themes and other materials we’ve read. You may divide the paper into two sections (“Respond” and “Connect”) or integrate these requirements into one essay. Please upload your paper to Canvas by 5 PM on Friday, October 23rd.
1. RESPOND Here you will offer your response to the film, introducing one or more main ideas that you found to be important, compelling, controversial, confusing, or otherwise noteworthy (and why?). Please do not simply summarize portions the film. You may also include further questions that the film provokes.
2. CONNECT Here you will offer your thoughts on how the film connects to themes from class, readings, ideas from lecture, or current events. You are also free to bring in outside ideas to analyze and make sense of the film.
Possible themes to think and write about:
– Changes to the nation-state and governance in the era of globalization– The willingness/ability of governments to take care of the welfare of citizens– Ideologies of neoliberalism exported to developing countries– The pros and cons of foreign investment– Views and representations of local communities in Kenya– How people live and work in informal urban communities (“slums”)– The pros and cons of slum clearance projects– The operations of international organizations like the UN in Africa
Grading:
1. (40 points) – The extent to which the response demonstrates an understanding of key points in the film and thoughtfully presents ideas2. (40 points) – The depth of the analysis, including reference to specific examplesfrom the film/readings and attention to the connections between materials3. (20 points) – The overall quality of the work, including evidence of effort, logic and reasoning, and conformity to the formatting guidelines
Formatting: Please use 12 point, Times New Roman font, double spaced, with page numbers, a title, and one-inch margins all around.
some tips for the film response paper due on Friday:
1) As mentioned in class, this assignment is a bit different than the integrative essays in that you are welcome to include more of your personal reactions and reflections (rather than the more formal and depersonalized expectations of the longer essay assignments). But the writing still should be polished and you should still take an analytical stance, not simply summarizing but offering points of your own.
2) As with all assignments in all classes, you will need to cite your sources properly. I find the simplest method is to use parenthetical documentation in the text with author and year, plus page numbers when “using a direct quote” (Smith 2018: 125). The only material you don’t need to cite in the response paper is the film Good Fortune itself, as that would get a little clunky with constant documentation (we know what film you are referring to). Anything else you bring in, from class or otherwise, will need to be cited.
3) Remember that your two tasks are to respond to the film (mention one or two compelling points and why they are important), and to connect that point or points to the course material (or outside material if you explain it thoroughly). You can divide the paper into two sections labelled “Respond” and “Connect” or weave these two tasks together in the course of your writing.
watching:
– The willingness/ability of governments to take care of the welfare of citizens– Ideologies of neoliberalism exported to developing countries (Where do you see evidence of the effects of neoliberalism in the film?)– The pros and cons of foreign investment– Views and representations of local communities in Kenya– How people live and work in informal urban communities (“slums”) (What do you think when you think of the term “slum” and how does that compare with the reality depicted?)– The pros and cons of slum clearance projects– The operations of international organizations like the UN in Africa (do you see a net positive or net negative effect of UN work in Kenya?)
