What is Australia’s relationship to the Asia-Pacific region?
Your statement should focus specifically on Australia’s First Peoples.
Before you begin writing it is important to familiarise yourself with the marking criteria, which how you will be assessed.
· The aim of this exercise is to develop a short critical statement that outlines your position on the question. This requires you to develop an argument that is supported by evidence. Given the short length of the assignment, evidence will need to be presented in summary form.
· You can consult a range of sources, including the information supplied in the first three modules, other academic books and articles, business reports and analyses, longer media articles (from news and magazine websites etc), and government reports and speeches.
· You do NOT need to use all of these types of sources in your statement.
· You may also briefly discuss relevant personal experiences in your statement.
· The minimum expectation would be for your assignment to contain at least four sources, but you should go beyond this minimum and achieving higher grades will require you to do so.
· At least one of these sources must be an academic source (refereed journal article or academic book)

A position statement outlines where you stand, your position, on a topic – in this case: What is Australia’s relationship to the Asia-Pacific region with specific focus on Australia’s First Peoples.
First you need to do some research on your topic. You may want to check out the library resources on finding information for assessments
Writing your position statement
1. State the topic
a. don’t rewrite the question
b. place it into the context and limits of exactly what you will address.
2. Pick a side
a. explicitly show your position on the topic.
3. Provide evidence that supports your position.
a. You may also briefly discuss relevant personal experiences in statement.
b. This can be based on personal opinion, or popular opinion from newspapers and social media, and academic literature. At least ONE source must be from refereed journal or academic book. NOTE: Given the short length of the assignment, evidence will need to be presented in summary form.
c. You need to find credible evidence that will make your position paper a strong and valid one. Check out this library resource for evaluating the types of evidence you use.
4. If there is a problem to be solved, provide an alternative solution and why you believe it could work, again based on credible evidence.
5. Finish off with a solid statement reiterating what your position is and why it is valid.
Referencing
· In academic writing, you must provide in-text citations and a reference list
· Again, the in-text citations are not included in word count
· In-text citations can be the author-date footnoting system or Harvard
· Whichever style you choose, the most important factor in referencing is to be consistent.
