Bad news for rogue landlords as twenty three local authorities around the UK have been provided with a funding pot of £4,049,000 to tackle rogue landlords. Hertfordshire received the smallest amount of £54,000, Sheffield received £145,000 and the highest amount went to Newham in the grand sum of £1,028,000.
The funding will help tenants understand their rights and be supported by local authorities if issues occur. Educating tenants is crucial so that they understand their rights and understand what to do when things go wrong. Furthermore, to also know that help is out there and assistance with legal action if need be.
Tackling overcrowding, dangerous and squalid living conditions is paramount for the welfare of tenants.
There have been numerous reported cases in London where tenants are living in Dickensian conditions. Many of these tenants are immigrants who do not necessarily have a good grasp of English and therefore perfect prey for rogue landlords. It is unsurprising that Newham local authority has had the largest share of the funding available as it comes up time and time again as a local authority that has had issues with rogue landlords.
The funding is part of a range of measures being introduced by Housing Minister, Kris Hopkins. The measures include the ability to look at a landlords income and assets when levying fines for housing breaches and compulsory membership of a redress scheme for letting agents.
