How Do I Segregate Waste?
You can start segregating by keeping separate bins for dry and wet waste. Keep in mind that you also have to store paper and plastic scrap separately. Sanitary and wet waste need to be disposed of on a daily basis. The dry component can be disposed more leisurely, maybe even once every few days.
Dry Waste
Dry waste needs to be completely cleaned of food residue before you put it in the bin. Anything that can be kept for a long time without decomposing, like paper, metal, fabric, glass, wood, and rubber, fall under this category.
The food containers and takeout boxes that you use also need to be cleaned of all food matter beforehand. This includes juice bottles and tetra packs, as this will prevent the release of stench and keep the ants and other vermin away.
Bottles containing eatables, like pickle and sauce, should also be thoroughly washed and rinsed before disposing. Make sure that whatever dry waste you wash is dried off before you dump them in the bin.
Clothing items and other fabric that is completely unusable also fall under the dry bracket. In case they are smeared with paint or other chemicals, they become Household Hazardous Waste (HHW).
Wet Waste
Wet waste is primarily your everyday kitchen scrap. Stuff like vegetable peels, egg shells, tea, and coffee fall under this category. It needs to be stored separately, and given for composting. You can even do this at your house, using proper aerated containers. Make sure that you have a garbage bag in place so that there is no residue left in the bin.
E-Waste
E-waste is nothing but your household electronic waste. Things like batteries, electronic toys, light bulbs, CFLs, watches, and cell phones fall under this category. These items need to be stored in a different container and kept away from moisture. E-waste also comes under HHW.
Other HHWs include toxic substances such as paint, thinners, cosmetic items, expired medicines, and cleaning liquids. Things like used razors and syringes are also part of this category.
Items like sanitary napkins, disposable diapers, bandages, and other items contaminated with blood or other bodily fluids fall under bio-medical waste. They should be wrapped in a newspaper, marked, and disposed of separately.
